TeamWorks: Discover Washington County! (age 18+) *2015*

Are you new in town and want to meet your neighbors? Or have you lived here for years and want to see your community through a new lens?
Then this is the volunteer experience for you!

What is TeamWorks?

Join a team of 8-10 people who, like you, are interested in getting to know our region through volunteerism. Your team will work together on a series of projects (listed below) with opportunities to discuss the impact your service is having on our community. Some projects will be paired with happy hour or a meal to allow your team to continue the conversation (meal/drink expenses are the responsibility of each individual team member). By the end of the project series you'll know more about our region and have made a few friends in the process!

Sign up below for at least 3 of the 5 sessions.
Although it's ideal for you to sign up for all five projects, if you cannot make it to one or two sessions you're still welcome to join this TeamWorks team.

Questions? Use the "email" button at the bottom of this page to contact the TeamWorks Leader, Felicita Monteblanco.

Discover Washington County!

Washington County is home to wonderful nature parks, productive community gardens, historic buildings, diverse communities, and a wide variety of community-building nonprofits. From Beaverton to Tigard and Hillsboro to Portland's Westhills, Washington County has so much to discover!

Team Schedule:

Session 1
Wednesday, May 20th, 6:00pm-8:30pm
Pack Perishable Food at Oregon Food Bank
NW Beaverton

Help OFB West eliminate hunger and its root causes by sorting and packaging perishable foods to be distributed to local families and people in need (via various local anti-hunger agencies). Wear closed-toe shoes and dress warmly for this one - we'll be in the refrigerated area!

Session 2

Saturday, May 30th, 9am-12pm
(Project 9am-11am; Snack & discussion 11am-12pm)

Get Summer Readers Ready to Roll w/Hillsboro Library
Hillsboro

Kids who participate in summer reading maintain their academic skills, develop a lifelong habit of reading, and have lots of fun doing it! Every child who participates in the Summer Reading Program gets a starter packet with a reading record, schedule of events, and fun incentive coupons. Help us assemble packets for the 5,000+ readers we expect this summer!

After the project, we'll gather at the Sesame Donuts Cafe (menu) within the library for a snack and the chance to get to know one another better and continue the conversation.

Session 3
Saturday, June 6th, 9am-12pm
Spruce Up Tualatin Hills Nature Park w/THPRD
Beaverton

Come out to one of the most beautiful parks in the area! During this project we'll learn more about Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD), a special service district that provides parks and recreational opportunities for citizens of all ages throughout areas of eastern Washington County. Our primary tasks will include removing invasive plants, maintaining trails, and planting native trees and shrubs.

Session 4 (optional)
TBD - Week of June 8th-14th
Portland Timbers' Stand Together Week
TBD Location

Meet a Portland Timbers or Thorns soccer player while volunteering for Stand Together Week! Project details will be selected on or before April 30th.

Session 5
Sunday, June 21st, 4-6pm
Cook It Up at Good Neighbor Center
Tigard

Join us in the kitchen as we prepare and serve up Sunday dinner for the residents of the Good Neighbor Center - a homeless shelter in Tigard for families. The Good Neighbor Center is dedicated to providing safe emergency housing and supportive services to empower families to transition out of homelessness and to become self-sufficient.
