Become a Volunteer Leader for 'Serve a Meal at Jean's Place' (age 18+)

Step up to leadership at Jean's Place!

Four times a month, Hands On Greater Portland volunteers serve a meal and facilitate a rousing game of bingo for the ladies at Jean's Place, a transitional housing program for adult, single homeless women in inner NE Portland. Volunteers each bring ingredients to contribute to the meal, and, under the guidance of the Hands On Volunteer Leader, work together to prepare dinner on-site to serve to the women. Bingo night is a highlight for the ladies of the shelter and we want to make sure this awesome project can continue!

  • Are you passionate about food access and supporting women in transition?

  • Do you enjoy working with others in a fun and collaborative environment?

  • Do you have a knack for throwing together simple and tasty meals (or following a recipe) for large groups?

If you answered yes to the questions above, you might be just the person we're looking for! Hands On Greater Portland is looking to build its team of committed Jean's Place volunteer leaders, both to lead our recurring 4th Monday meal-service shift and to serve as substitute leaders on other shifts.

Volunteer Leaders, or VLs, play an integral role in helping us manage our signature volunteer projects - from collaboration with our nonprofit partners, to volunteer sign-up support, to project management and follow-up. As our strongest link to the community, VLs help ensure that every volunteer has a great experience and that nonprofit needs are being met. In this training you will learn the basic skills and information you will need to begin taking on leadership as part of our core Volunteer Leader Team, with a specific focus on the "Serve a Meal and Play Bingo at Jean's Place" project.

  1. Sign up for our upcoming Jean's Place Volunteer Leader Orientation below

  2. Submit this VL application to dannon@handsonportland.org

What is required to be a Jean's Place leader?

  • Passion for community service and empowering others to give back!

  • Desire to develop your leadership skills in the volunteer arena.

  • Effective interpersonal skills - including strong communication skills, both in person and via email.

  • Ability to track and log volunteer attendance records and project data.

  • Ability to oversee collaborative cooking projects, using pre-selected recipes (we have a collection of favorites!) or ones you come up with yourself.

  • Commitment to sending out ingredient assignments to volunteers at least 3 days prior to the project, bringing a portion of the basic ingredients for each meal yourself, and improvising when necessary (e.g. if a volunteer doesn't show up with their assigned meal item).

  • Experience as a general volunteer on at least two Hands On managed projects.
