TeamWorks: Exploring Disability & Empowering Individuals (age 18+)

Join a TeamWorks team for a series of interrelated projects, designed to explore a local neighborhood or community issue through the lens of volunteerism. Learn, serve, and connect with others on this team-based commitment to your community!

Did you know that nearly 20 percent of people in the United States experience some sort of disability during their lifetime? Chances are we all know a person who has or is currently experiencing disability--either physical, mental, developmental, or otherwise. This TeamWorks experience is designed to bring us together to explore the definition of disability, learn about some great programs in town working to empower communities for whom it touches, and get engaged ourselves in working for and with individuals who experience a wide range of disabilities.

As a team, we'll be assisting at a Bingo Night hosted by Albertina Kerr and Port City Development Center, handcycling with Oregon Disability Sports, attending a performance put on by PHAMEa lifelong arts learning, performance, and community engagement program for adults who experience developmental disability, and learning more about Harper's Playground, Portland's first universally accessible play areaAll the while, we'll be discussing some of the challenges facing people experiencing disability and exploring ways we can support and empower this community. There will be some short reading assignments interspersed throughout the TeamWorks to deepen our understanding and discussion of the issues we'll be exploring.

If you've ever been curious to explore some of the nonprofits doing great things with and for people experiencing disabilities, now's your chance!

What is TeamWorks? TeamWorks teams consist of approximately 10-12 people, who, like you, are interested in getting to know our region through volunteerism. Led by a Hands On trained volunteer leader, your team will work together on a series of projects (listed below) with opportunities to discuss the impact your service is having on our community. Some projects will be paired with happy hour or a meal to allow your team to continue the conversation (meal/drink expenses are the responsibility of each individual team member).

Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks. Commitment to every project in the series is important, so please carefully check the schedule below before signing up! If you know in advance you'd have to miss one of the projects, let us know and you may still be eligible to join the team. Questions can be directed to Bridget Weitman at bridget@handsonportland.org.

Please note: All particpants will be required to complete a background check to participate in this TeamWorks.

Team Schedule:

Session 1:
Friday, August 14th, 4:30-8:00pm
Team Kick-Off and Bingo Night at Port City Development Center
N Portland

Let's come together to meet our team and dig into exploring the topic of disabilities! We will meet up at 4:30pm for a quick snack at a local venue to meet our team and discuss our backgrounds and reasons for joining the team.

At 5:30, we'll walk down to Port City Development Center (just down the street) to join other volunteers and Albertina Kerr to help put on a Bingo Night for adults with developmental disabilities at the Port City Development Center. The Port City Development Center is home to many activity and recreation programs that provide career and social support to adults with developmental disabilities from all around the metro area. During the bingo night we will be assisting the staff with event set up, calling out bingo numbers, and helping adults locate numbers on their bingo cards. This event will be a great opportunity to learn more about Albertina Kerr, Port City, and how they're working to empower the adults they serve. Come prepared for a fun night of bingo!

Session 2:
Wednesday, August 26th, 5:15-10:00pm
PHAME Up the Fall Performance
SW Portland

We have the privilege of attending a performance of Up the Fall, a newly-commissioned original musical presented by PHAMEa lifelong arts learning, performance, and community engagement program for adults who experience developmental disability. We will arrive early to usher this special performance just for those who work with people who experience disabilities, and their families. We will then get to stay and watch this special performance! After the musical, we will have the opportunity to stay and chat with the actors and director of this incredible production. This will be a very special night of singing, dancing, and empowerment.

Session 3:
Tuesday, September 1st, 4:00-7:00pm
Handcycling with Oregon Disability Sports
N Portland

Come join Oregon Disability Sports and their partner, Incight, for one of their annual Summer Handcycling Series events at Portland International Raceway! Oregon Disability Sports promotes and provides recreational, fitness, and competitive opportunities to people experiencing physical disabilities.  During this event, we will be helping out with event support, set up, and clean up. If interested, volunteers will also have the opportunity to give handcycling a try! Handcycles and equipment will be provided. Come out and experience a new way of cycling while supporting a great event.

Session 4:
Wednesday, September 9th, 5:00-7:30pm
More Play for More People Tour and Team Wrap-Up
N Portland

During our final session we have the opportunity to tour Harper's Playground at Arbor Lodge Park. Harper's Playground is the first universally accessible playground in Portland. It provides a safe place for children to play regardless of physical ability. After our tour, we will have the opportunity to learn more about the Harper's Playground organization, and their plans for expansion to parks all around the Portland metro area.

After the tour, we'll circle up at a nearby location for our final TeamWorks wrap-up. Time to explore what we've learned and set our intentions for future engagement!
