Opportunity Details

Clothing Closet Reorganization Party (age 14+)

HomePlate Youth Services receives a lot of donated clothing and hygiene items to meet the basic needs of youth ages 12-24 experiencing housing instability or homelessness. But we don't have a staff member or regular volunteer to help us manage those donations - So we need your help!

As a volunteer on HillsDOER Day, you will help us sort through the recently donated clothing AND all of our "in stock" clothing to refresh and organize our supply. This will involve unpacking bags and plastic tubs, sorting according to type of item, size, and gender, removing outdated, damaged, or unusable items, and re-packing tubs into our clothing closet. We like to give our youth a positive "shopping" experience in our clothing closet so you'll get the chance to stock the best items for them!

At least a few volunteers will be required to help with lifting up to 50 pound bins and will be tasked with bending, squatting, sitting, standing, and other physical movements. Join us in sweating and sorting with your neighbors!

HomePlate supports the positive development of young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability through community building, education, access to services and resources, and youth empowerment. Our organization envisions communities where homelessness is a short-term circumstance, not a long term or chronic condition, and youth are supported in their communities. Last year, HomePlate provided resources to 890 youth in Washington County.

Volunteers participating in HillsDOER Day will provide much-needed people-power for our small, grassroots organization. Our youth LOVE shopping in our closet because we get lots of fashionable and functional clothing donated by fantastic community members. But it's often difficult for youth to find the items that they really need or want due to the disorganization of our clothes closet. Volunteering with us allows you to be involved with our crucial mission of providing resources to youth in transition and seeking support.

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing (appropriate for being indoors - but the closet and sorting area get quite warm when the weather outside is above 75 degrees). Water and snacks will be provided.

Requirements:

  • Must be 14 or older to participate; volunteers younger than 18 must attend with an adult.
