Sheet Mulching to create a Native Food Hedgerow (age 5+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Join us for a very special mulching project at Zenger Farm. Volunteers will assist Wisdom of the Elders in this restoration project that will replace field grasses with a variety of native shrubs that were traditional "first foods" and medicinal plants gathered by native tribes. Once established the hedgerow provides a location where tribal people and others can gather wild berries, nuts, rose hips, etc.

Volunteers will be laying down cardboard over a designated area to become a native foods hedgerow. We will then cover the cardboard with about 6 inches of wood chips and leaves from arborists trimmings. The work will be carried out by filling wheelbarrows from a stockpile of wood chips moving them to the hedgerow area along the edge of a wetland, and then spreading the chips with a rake. The sheet mulch area is downhill from the stockpile area, so there is up and downhill walking required.  Bring gardening gloves if you have them and wear closed shoes. If sunny, bring sun protection in the form of sunscreen and or hat and clothing that covers. Recommended to to bring bottled, though we will provide as well.

Spring is in the air and this spot at Zenger Farm is a beautiful urban farm setting in the middle of SE Portland!

Volunteers will learn how to sheet mulch to remove field grass and build good soil in preparation for planting and establishing berry and food shrubs for people and wildlife. Volunteers will also learn about our native plants that provide berries.

Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. (Wisdom) formed Wisdom Workforce as a social venture to provide a holistic approach to environmental habitat restoration utilizing Native American traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and conventional science, strengthen Native workers’ career engagement, cultural identity, positive health and wellness resiliency, and address Native American disparities.
