Homework Help for Refugee Children (age 16+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Kateri Park is an apartment complex in close-in SE Portland that is home to many low-income families, including many refugees. We run a Homework Club for resident children who need a little extra help and can’t get it at home because the parents don’t speak, read or write English.

We’d love for you to get involved! You will have a great time working with kids from Somalia, Ethiopia, Burma and Nepal, and you’ll really make a difference. All you need is patience, flexibility, the ability to explain things simply, and a curiosity about kids from another culture.

Homework Club runs every Monday-Thursday afternoon during the school year. It is organized by the Resident Services program, assisted by students from the PSU Capstone Project.

Come in and help out one time, or commit to one or more afternoons per week! Sign up below to join a group of Hands On Greater Portland volunteers for an afternoon of fun with some awesome and energetic kids. Thank you!

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project. While no teaching experience is required, this project does require a fair bit of self-direction as the students are at all different stages of learning.

  • If you plan to bring a guest to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project: Youth Volunteer Release Form

Click "Sign Up" below to reserve your spot! Need help signing up? Call 503-200-3355.
