Opportunity Details

Veterinary Clinic for Homeless People's Pets (age 16+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

CORE MISSION - HELPING THE PETS OF THE HOMELESS

Since 1999, the PAW Team has helped keep people and pets together during the most difficult times of their lives. Our mission is to provide vet care for pets belonging to homeless people.

We do this through our Wellness Clinics. At our clinics, pets receive basic wellness care that may include an exam, vaccinations, medications and supplies.

In addition to serving homeless people and their pets, we also help at-risk individuals and families living in acute poverty. We network with agencies that serve those who need it most such as domestic violence shelters, homeless youth, mentally challenged adults, people living on the streets or in transitional housing and families in extreme poverty. We keep families together at the most difficult times of their lives.

VOLUNTEERING WITH US
Volunteers will guide clients and their pets through their clinic visit and provide support to clinic staff throughout their appointment. Beginning at the intake process, volunteers will help clients fill out paperwork, hand out pet supplies, interact with clients while they wait to see the vet, assist with office to clinic communication, and other tasks required to facilitate a positive client and pet clinic visit. Volunteers will be stationed throughout the space and may change roles during the projects, depending on where assistance is needed most, so please be prepared to be flexible. Please note that this project serves homeless individuals and their pets. As a volunteer you are there to support the clinic, not to socialize with the animals. Be sure to be conscientious about our clients' and their pets' comfort level in interacting with you and others.

Volunteers must wear comfortable, close-toed shoes as much of the project requires you to be on your feet and moving around. Please do not bring any valuables, including purses or backpacks, with you to the project. We recommend that volunteers wear long pants as you may have interactions with the client's pets. Also, plan to wear layers because of the different temperatures of spaces (both indoors and outdoors) in which you will be working.

Snacks and water will be provided, but volunteers may bring their own water bottle or snacks as desired. There is a space within the building for staff and volunteers to utilize as a break room and volunteers should feel free to take breaks as needed.

PAW TEAM LOCATION - WE ARE A LITTLE TRICKY TO FIND!
Our location isn't obvious because we are not able to post signage on the outside of the building and because Oak St. does not go through (because of the location of the adjacent construction site, formerly the park). Our building is on Oak Street, which does not have car access in this block. We are located within the St. Francis of Assisi (SFA) complex, to the North of the former St. Francis park entrance. Volunteers should look for our sandwich board sign placed on the sidewalk on clinic days. When you sign up for this project, you'll receive an email with more details about the location.

Plan to meet in the daylight basement, down the stairs and to the right of our main office entrance. This space functions as our waiting room during the clinic hours and will be where we conduct our 30 minute training/orientation prior to the start of the project. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can start the training on time.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed.
