Opportunity Details

Potluck in the Park 25th Anniversary BBQ (age 12+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Potluck in the Park has been serving a free hot meal to anyone in need since 1991. Every Sunday, rain or shine, 52 weeks a year, we provide a hot meal in downtown Portland at O'Bryant Square. 400-800 Portlanders do not go hungry on Sunday because of Potluck in the Park. We are a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization and we accomplish our mission of providing nutritious food and an atmosphere of community to anyone in need, because of volunteers like you!

Potluck will be celebrating 25 years of service with another big BBQ and Resource Fair on Sunday, August 28th. This is a very special celebration - the last one was our 20th Anniversary in 2011. We will move to the South Park Blocks on the PSU campus for the day to have more room and shade and will be barbecuing on site. The Resource Fair will include health screening from OHSU participants, as well as information booths from a diverse array of social service providers.

Volunteer Shift Details:

  • Set-Up, 9:00am - 1:00pm - 15 Volunteers needed to help us set up tables, chairs, canopies, etc for the Resource Fair & BBQ.

  • Meal Service, 1:00pm - 5:00pm - 80 Volunteers needed to run food from trucks to serving line, serve food, monitor garbage cans/recycling, and serve water to volunteers.

  • Break Down/Clean Up, 3:00pm - 6:30pm - 15 Volunteers needed to take down tables, chairs, canopies, sort items, recycle, sweep sidewalks and serve late arrivals.

Event Details:

  • Volunteers should sign in at the Volunteer Check in Table beginning about 20 minutes prior to their shift.

  • Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.  We will be outside so dress appropriately; wear sunscreen and a hat if it is a sunny day.

  • Please be prepared to be flexible.  We will try to keep groups together; if we can’t do this, please understand the need to have all areas covered and that job re-assignments may occur.

If volunteers have any questions, please call or email Norm Rice @ 503-789-1246 or norm@potluckinthepark.org.

Project Requirements:

  • We ask that volunteers are 12 years of age or older to attend this project. We do make exceptions on a case by case basis where a volunteer is younger than 12 years old, but we reserve the right to restrict them to areas appropriate to age and stature. Any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • If you plan to bring your children or other guests to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian, or - if attending with an adult - have them fill one out at the event. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project: Youth Volunteer Release Form. Remember to give this to the person running check-in!
