Opportunity Details

Clean Community Gardens & Support Family Food Security! (age 16+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

*Note: This project is rescheduled after the snow weather canceled the original project date over MLK Weekend in Jan 2017.

Bienestar builds housing, hope and futures for the well-being of working families in Washington County.

Join us as we clean up our community gardens, removing yard waste, leaves and garbage to get things ready for the growing season! By cleaning up any excess waste or trash, volunteers will help prepare the community garden plots for residents to begin planting crops in the spring.

Wear closed-toed shoes or boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Be prepared for rain! We’ll have coffee and water and some donut-like snack for folks, as well as needed supplies.

Volunteers will be able to connect with members of the community while learning more about local sustainable gardening efforts. Working on site at our apartment properties, volunteers can also learn more about affordable housing in the area, the local farmworker community, and Hillsboro's Latino population.

At the end of the day, we would love to have a few volunteers help bring the cleared materials to an off-site recycling or garbage facility. If you are are willing to bring a truck and help transport cleaned-up debris, we would be immensely grateful!

In addition to offering access to safe and affordable housing, we aim to improve the health of our residents through programs that promote self-sufficiency. Our community gardens allow our residents to access low-cost, healthy and sustainable food options close to home. By clearing the gardens of debris that accumulated over the winter, volunteers will remove barriers to participation for residents of all ages.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 17 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
