Kitchen Assistant for OMSI's Outdoor Science School (age 18+) Referral

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking food-loving individuals excited to be volunteer kitchen assistants at its rustic camps, beginning on April 1st, 2012. There are two separate volunteer positions at two separate locations and each position can be filled by one or more volunteers. One location is the Pacific Marine Science School, located between Astoria and Seaside on the Oregon Coast. The other is the Santiam Science School, which is located on 41 acres of forest on the banks of the beautiful south Santiam River. To learn more about these sites visit:

Volunteers in this position provide assistance with food preparation, meal planning, clean up and other dining hall management duties for up to 150 campers! The length of the volunteer commitment is flexible, and could be from one week to two months. Transportation to and from the camp location from OMSI’s Water Avenue site is available. Free room and board in a beautiful setting are also provided during your volunteer stay at camp.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Self-directed and able to learn basic tasks and follow instructions

  • Must maintain a professional appearance and excellent hygiene

  • Possess an Oregon Food Handler’s card or be willing to obtain one prior to start date

  • Effective communication skills in order to maintain positive and open communications with all campers and staff

  • Basic knowledge of food handling, preparation and safety procedures preferred

  • Must be comfortable in an outdoor camp setting

  • Must be comfortable in a non-smoking, group environment

  • Must be 18 years old, minimum

  • Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help prepare and cook planned menus for campers and camp staff

  • Maintain Food Handler’s Certificate food handling standards in kitchen and pantries

  • Assist with washing cooking dishes

  • Act as a positive role model for campers at all times

  • Work with and support other OMSI staff members

  • Potentially stand for long periods of time and carry items ranging from 5-80 lbs

  • Assume other responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Outdoor Education Manager

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with Cook staff to order food for meals


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow recipes and improvise when necessary

  • Experience in developing meals that are nutritious and well balanced

  • Any knowledge of special dietary needs, such as gluten-free, vegan, lactose-free, and how to cook nutritious meals accordingly is welcomed but not required
