Help Build It! (age 16+) *MLK 2012*
Be one of 2,100 volunteers honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to communities throughout the Greater Portland area.
Volunteers will help build eight additional new homes for low-income, hardworking families to complete the Victoria Cottages sub-division. Victoria Cottages is located on Southeast 204th Place in the Rockwood and North Central neighborhoods of Gresham. There are currently 14-preexisting new homes neighboring the Habitat build site.
Habitat’s goal is to provide energy efficient housing for families with low allergens, high-efficiency utilities, access to public transit and pervious surfaces. The exterior design and color will compliment the neighboring homes and each entryway will face Southeast 204th Place. The eight Habitat homes will be built to Earth Advantage certification levels.
What to wear
- Closed-toe shoes or boots. Tennis shoes are most common on the work site. You will not be allowed to volunteer on site if you wear sandals or flip flops.
- Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or stained. Light clothing is recommended for the hot weather, and layering clothing is recommended for cold weather. Please wear rain gear when appropriate.
What to bring
- Water bottle
- Lunch and snacks (unless provided by your volunteer group)
Personal tools, if you have them! For example: hammer, tape measure, carpenter’s pencil, work gloves, safety glasses. We do not allow personal power tools on the site

Project Requirements:
- Please fill out this MLK Adult & Youth Waiver and bring it with you to the project. All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
- Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project.
- If you plan to bring your children or other guests to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed.
