TeamWorks: Bike Fun and Two Wheeled Advocacy (age 16+) *Hands On*
September is Bike Commute Challenge month - a time to challenge yourself and your colleagues, friends and family to take to two wheels while commuting to work and school. This fun and friendly challenge has inspired us to create a TeamWorks volunteer team focused on all things bicycle! We’ll be working with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the Community Cycling Center and Sunday Parkways to lend a hand to some of their programs. In the process, we’ll learn more about bike riding and bicycle advocacy in the greater Portland area.
Each project will also include discussion time and we’ll explore a variety of topics, resources and issues related to cycling in the Portland area. We will be using PDX by Bike by Meghan Sinnott and Elly Blue, a wonderful guide to discovering Portland by bicycle, as a starting point for many discussions and as a manual for our rides. It’s a great introduction to cycling in our city and only $5.
Participants are, of course, encouraged to bike to each volunteer project and we will be organizing a ride to each once we meet for the first time and select a mutually convenient starting point. We will join the Bicycle Ttransportation Alliance’s Bike Commute Challenge as a team and challenge ourselves and each other as we log our miles for the month of September. Participants will also be kept informed of and invited to participate in a variety of other cycling related events and opportunities throughout the TeamWorks.
Note: If you would really like to join but don’t have a bicycle and/or are not able to use a bicycle don’t worry, email the team leader, Dannon Raith at dannon@handsonportland.org. We can work something out!
What is TeamWorks? TeamWorks teams consist of approximately 10-15 individuals, led by a Hands On trained volunteer leader, who commit to volunteering for every project in the series, so please carefully check the schedule below before signing up! Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks. If you know in advance you'd have to miss one of the projects, let us know and you might still be eligible to join the team. Questions can be directed to Dannon Raith, dannon@handsonportland.org or 206.902.6097.
