Opportunity Details

TLC Farm Medicinal Plant Restoration (age 5+) *MLK 2013*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The TLC Farm is a very special community project at the convergence of forest, rural, and urban lands. The boundary of this organic community farm has been overwhelmed by invasive blackberries. These have been cut down and a combination of goat grazing and hand work to remove to remaining root crowns will prepare the area for a native medicinal plant garden.

Volunteers will help plant native plants in areas that are already prepared and pull blackberry crowns and ivy elsewhere.

Gloves and tools (shovels, pulaskis, loppers) and snacks will be provided. Please bring drinking water and wear weather and task-appropriate clothes.

This project is in partnership with the Tryon Life Community Farm, Tryon Creek Watershed Council and West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District. At TLC Farm, Portland's sustainability movements are creating one example of how urban density human habitat can coexist with thriving food systems and native ecologies. Their demonstration projects, all of which are workshopped and volunteer-run, illustrate how specific technologies and practices work, and how they can interconnect.
