City of Gresham?s Earth Day Recycling Collection Event (age 16+) Referral

Help the City of Gresham’s Earth Day Recycling Collection Event!

Did you know that batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, film plastics, ridged plastics, and cell phones are all recyclable items? They can all be recycled, just not at the curb like your regular recyclables like cardboard and glass. Each year the City of Gresham offers a free option to the Citizens of Gresham and Wood Village for disposing these hard-to-recycle items.

We need your help in running the City’s largest environmental outreach event of the year.

Key Responsibilities:
Volunteer roles range from unloading recyclables from cars, to helping sort batteries, handling fluorescent tubes, and directing traffic.

Organizational Impact: Your help will ensure that hard to recycle materials get to the proper recycler without contamination and therefor reduce the amount of recyclables heading to the landfill.

Sustained Community Outcomes of the Assignment: Last year 1,060 cars brought in 2.4 miles of fluorescents, 96 cubic yards of rigid plastics, 13,000lbs of paper to be shredded, 2,590lb of batteries, and almost 100 phones. Learn more: http://www.greshamoregon.gov/earthday/

Training Provided and/or Needed: Before your shift starts, a City staff member will train you at your specific station.

Support Available to the Volunteer: You will have staff in your area to assist you, or you will be part of a team.

Commitment, Time, Location: This year the collection event will be located at City Hall, 1333 N. W. Eastman Parkway. There are two shift slots this year: 8:00am-11:45am and 11:30am-3:00pm.

Desired Skills and Knowledge: You don’t have to be a master recycler to help out; anyone over 16 years old can volunteer.  *Volunteers must be able to stand on their feet for at least 3 hours.

Benefits to the volunteer:
• Keep hard to recycle materials out of the landfill
• Keep harmful materials out of the environment
• Enjoy helping the City reduce its carbon footprint
• Make new friends and network
• Gain community service credit for your school or club

The annual Earth Day recycling event is the largest outreach event hosted by the City and is free service the City of Gresham offers to Gresham and Wood Village residents and businesses.
