Food Cart Fest - Where Fab Foodies Make a Difference! (age 18+) Referral

Join ALSO (Adult Learning Systems of Oregon, Inc.) in promoting the full inclusion of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the life of their community!

As a volunteer, you help contribute to our mission by dedicating your time and support by working at this one day event that helps us raise funds to fill budget gaps, while building awareness. The proceeds from this event directly benefit the people supported by ALSO. This event provides revenue for our many programs as well as supplemental things, such as groceries and fuel for outings that connect the people we support with their local communities.

PDX Food Cart Fest is a fun event - but your support is needed to ensure it's a success! Volunteer tasks include:

  • Setting up tables and chairs prior to the event opening as well as stowing chairs after event has ended.
  • Posting signs and banners to event fencing.
  • Manning fire exits, bike corral, refrigeration unit, etc.
  • Fill event security positions, which involves walking the premises, keeping an eye out for issues and assisting hired security and event staff should a security situation arise.
  • Alcohol monitor volunteers will be trained by our organization in advance and are responsible for ensuring patrons aren't visibly intoxicated, check ID's of patrons under 26 yrs old, if necessary, etc.
  • Sell entry wristbands at event entrance tables.
  • Operate mobile device to accept credit cards, take Groupon tickets, give change for cash paying patrons, etc.
  • Parking lot volunteers will assist directing flow of traffic, moving barricades/cones as needed, monitoring parking lot "M" during event.
  • Recycling Station volunteers monitor compost, recycle and garbage rollcarts in designated areas and ensure patrons put the right items in the proper containers.
  • We also have volunteer opportunities that are simply "floaters" which will be directed as needed.
  • Sell ALSO bottled water from our vendor booths within the event.

Volunteers will be provided with an event t-shirt and we recommend volunteers wear comfortable shoes for walking, standing, etc. and appropriate clothing for an outdoor rain-or-shine event. We provide bottled water throughout your shift. We would highly recommend volunteers bring/use appropriate sunblock protection and sunglasses/hats etc. are ok to wear during the event.

Volunteers will learn about our organization prior to the event by attending our Volunteer Training session. In this meeting we cover the duties and best practices of our one day event as well as educate volunteers about our programs/support services. We also share two video's that we created that shows a day in the life of 2 of the individuals we support!
