Opportunity Details

TeamWorks: Action, Passion & Talent = Civic Engagement (age 18+) *Hands On*

Join a TeamWorks team of volunteers for a series of done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Greater Portland TeamWorks Leader. TeamWorks offers volunteers the opportunity to make a slightly longer-term commitment to volunteering, delve into a topic or issue-area, and get to know other volunteers in the process.

What does it mean to be an engaged community member? How can we engage with our city, county, and local neighborhoods to make the change we wish to see?

During Older American's Month, join with Elders in Action and city officials to learn how you can impact your community and government through civic engagement! We will begin by exploring the many different forms civic engagement takes and work to identify ways to use our talents to become a change agents in our community.

Our exploration will include personal conversations with elected officials, tours of Portland City Hall & Multnomah County Commissioner's offices, an opportunity to help out at a candidate's forum for the May election, and the opportunity to talk with other passionate community members. Together, we will identify and and share issues you are passionate about, explore how you can make your voice heard, make a personal plan to become engaged in the community, and learn how you make a difference!

Join us if you...

  • Are new to this community or to community engagement and want to learn more.

  • Care about your neighborhood and issues that affect the community we live in.

  • Are passionate about the issues of concern to older adults, no matter what your age.

  • Have never met with or spoken to your elected officials. It's easy and they want to hear from you!

  • Have experience in community engagement and want to share your ideas with us!

This is a five-session series beginning April 23rd and running through May 15th, 2014.

What is Encore Action TeamWorks? Encore Action Teams connect a group of 10-15 peer-led volunteers of all ages to a series of meaningful service opportunities that meet important needs of the community while also providing opportunities for volunteers to proactively learn about critical social issues affecting their communities. To support a meaningful and enriching experience, volunteers are asked to commit to participate in all or most of the learning activities and service projects listed in the series. Please check the Project Schedule below. Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks Program. Questions can be directed to mark@eldersinaction.org or call 503-595-7533.

Age-Friendly Orientation and Team Kickoff
Downtown Portland office
As a group, we'll get to know one another and explore what it means to be a change agent. We'll take some time to identify our own personal passions and then get an introduction to the partners we'll be working with and the avenues for action we'll be exploring during the course of this team. Lunch will be provided!

Session 2: Saturday, April 26, 12:30pm - 3:00pm
Lend a Hands at the Candidates Forum
Hollywood Senior Center, NE Portland
Have you ever been to a candidate's forum? Candidates forums are great opportunities to engage local candidates on topics of importance and help us, as community members, get to know our candidates and the positions they hold on a variety of issues so we can be informed voters. During this session, we'll help out at a local candidates forum and learn more about what the candidates have to say about the issues of concern to older adults living in the City of Portland and larger Multnomah County area.

Session 3: Thursday, May 1, 12:30pm - 2:30 pm
A Look Inside City Hall

Portland City Hall, Downtown
What goes on inside the walls of City Hall? Our group will get a tour of building itself, learn more about the inner workings of city government, and then enjoy coffee, tea, and conversation with the City of Portland Commissioner Fish.

Session 4: Thursday, May 8, 1:30pm - 3:00pm
A Look Inside Multnomah County Government
Multnomah County Offices, SE Portland
After our tour of City Hall, we will bring our gaze out during this session to take a look at our County and the many services it provides. We'll tour the County Commission offices and get a special Q&A session with Mulnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith.

Session 5: Thursday, May 15, 5:00pm - 7:30pm
Bring Your Passion to Action

SE Uplift offices, SE Portland
For our final session, let's hone in our focus on what it takes to advocate at the neighborhood level. We'll enjoy a panel session with the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, and learn more about what it means to engage right in our own backyards. Afterwards, we'll wrap up our team experience by sharing our personal plans for sustained community involvement. Pizza included to help fuel the dialogue and foster inspiration and connection!
