TeamWorks: Discover Washington County! (age 18+) *2014*

Join this TeamWorks team for a series of done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader. TeamWorks offers you the opportunity to delve into a topic or issue-area while getting to know other volunteers in the process.


Discover Washington County!

Washington County is home to wonderful nature parks, productive community gardens, historic buildings, diverse communities, and a wide variety of community-building nonprofits. From Beaverton to Tigard and Hillsboro to Portland's Westhills, Washington County has so much to discover!

Are you new in town and want to meet your neighbors? Or have you lived in Washington County for years and want to learn something new about your home? This is the volunteer team for you!


What is TeamWorks?

TeamWorks teams consist of 10-12 individuals who volunteering together to learn more about a specific topic or community (in this case, Washington County). The team is led by a Hands On trained Volunteer Leader and there are scheduled opportunities to share a meal and get to know one another while discussing the volunteering that you've accomplished together.

Session 1
Saturday, May 17, 10am-2pm
(Project 10am-1pm; Lunch & discussion 1-2pm)

Grow Food for Neighbors at Beaverton Giving Gardens
Beaverton

We'll kick off this TeamWorks series by contributing to Beaverton's Giving Gardens - community gardens that generate fresh, healthy produce for local food pantries (via Tualatin Valley Gleaners, Sunshine Pantry and St. Matthews Food Pantry). A variety of tasks are typically availble, including: laying down paths, raking, planting vegetables and flowers, weeding, and harvesting. After the project, we'll gather at a local cafe for lunch and the chance to get to know one another.

Wednesday, May 21, 6-9pm

Prepare for Summer Reading at Cedar Mill Library
NW Portland

The Cedar Mill Community Library provides free access to more than 1.3 million items in circulation within the Washington County public library system. We'll be prepping materials for the library's summer reading program, while learning more about this and other local libraries, followed by a chance to chat over dessert!


Session 3
Wednesday, May 28, 6:00pm-8:30pm
Pack Perishable Food at Oregon Food Bank
NW Beaverton

Our third project will take place at the Oregon Food Bank. We'll be helping OFB West eliminate hunger and its root causes by sorting and packaging perishable foods to be distributed to local families and people in need (via various local anti-hunger agencies). Wear closed-toe shoes and dress warmly for this one - we'll be in the refrigerated area!


Session 4
Saturday, June 7, 9:00am-1:00pm
(Project 9am-12pm; Lunch & discussion 12-1pm)

Build Trails at Jenkins Estate Park
SW Beaverton

During this project we'll learn more about Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District - a special service district that provides parks and recreational opportunities for citizens of all ages throughout areas of eastern Washington County. Our primary task at Jenkins Estate Park will be to help build and maintain trails in order to ensure access to the beautiful natural areas in our community.

Friday, June 13, 4:30pm-10:00pm
Support the Washington County Museum at Taste of Washington County
Hillsboro

The annual Taste of Washington County event is a fundraising dinner for the Washington County Museum. The funds raised benefit the museum's education programs and operations.  The "Heart of Washington County" award is also given during the event, to a local person who has positively impacted the county. We'll be helping the event run smoothly by serving hors d ourves, selling raffle tickets, helping bus tables, and wrapping up the event. This session is optional and is only open to volunteers age 21+.

Saturday, June 21, 10:00am-1:00pm
(Project 10am-12pm; Lunch & discussion 12-1pm)

Farming Party at Supa Fresh Youth Farm
Tigard

We'll be wrapping up this TeamWorks series at the Supa Fresh Youth Farm, which provides underserved youth with the opportunity to develop important skills for real world success while learning about fresh, healthy food. We'll be planting, weeding, painting, and helping with any other emergent tasks that need to be done on that day. This project will be followed by a wrap-up lunch!
