Meals On Wheels Summer in September Jambalaya Festival (age 16+) Referral
Join the MLK Meals on Wheels Center to lend a hand at our 9th Annual Summer in September Jambalaya Festival and BBQ presented by New Seasons Market on Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 6 p.m. at Dawson Park. This unique neighborhood event features an authentic Creole Jambalaya meal, ribs and a variety of picnic food along with entertainment and activities for the entire family. We feel this is a great fun Intergenerational community event for all, with live music and a Kids area and delicious food.
All proceeds provide hot meals for seniors in Northeast Portland. The MLK Center serves approximately 85 meals in the center and delivers 200 meals to frail, homebound elderly citizens.
We’re currently looking for community partners to help with event set-up, staffing our Shaved Ice Booth, serving participants and helping us clean up at the end of the day. Shifts are approximately 4 hours long and there are multiple shifts available on the day of the event!

The mission of Meals on Wheels People is to enrich the lives of seniors and assist them in maintaining independence by making nutritious food, social contacts, and other resources accessible. Loaves & Fishes Centers was founded in 1969 by Jean Wade, Martha Shull and Cay Kreiger, who saw a need in the community that was not being met. They gathered in the basement of the Lincoln Street Methodist Church in February 1970 to serve a hot lunch to about a dozen seniors and then delivered 14 Meals-On-Wheels on paper plates wrapped in newspaper.
