Step Up to Leadership! Shadow a Hands On Volunteer Leader (age 16+)

Volunteer Leaders (or VLs) are Hands On Greater Portland's strongest link to the community. These volunteers lead our Hands On Managed Projects and their mission is to ensure that the all volunteers have a great experience.

This is a special opportunity for current VL's or anyone interested in becoming one to learn about our VL
program while out on an actual Hands On project. You will be joining an experienced Volunteer Leader as they lead the project from start to finish. We've reserved a slot for you on these projects so if you'd like to shadow on one of these projects you will only need to sign up for the date of the project below.

Saturday, October 25, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Clean Kids Playrooms and Create a Safe Space for Therapy

Kinship House, NE Portland
Help transform unfortunate beginnings into successful futures! In the state of Oregon today, there are about 13,000 children in foster care awaiting a permanent home, many of whom have experienced multiple losses and severe trauma. Kinship House provides therapy for these children and their families to help heal and adjust to their new lives. Part of this therapy involves our therapeutic playrooms and yard; Art, doll houses, dress up, and make believe allow these child the chance to express their feelings. Our group will help spruce up these roomes -- cleaning surfaces, sterilizing toys, inventoring game pieces, discarding dried up markers and making sure all toys are operational in our therapeutic playrooms. This project is in search of a new Volunteer Leader!

Wednesday, October 29th, 4:45pm - 6:30pm
Get Artsy with Refugee Kids
Kateri Park Housing Complex, SE Portland
Kateri Park is an affordable housing community, in which more than half of the residents are refugees. The largest group is from Somalia with a smaller population from Burmese and Nepali refugee families. We will spend the evening channeling our creativity and working on an art project with the kids of Kateri Park through the Get Artsy! Program. This project is always looking for supporting leaders -- both Volunteer Leaders and Art Leaders -- and a great opportunity to work directly with kids!

Saturday, November 8, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Restore Habitat and Maintain Trails at Powell Butte
Powell Butte, Outer SE Portland
Get outdoors at Powell Butte and get familiar with one of the many restoration projects Hands On hosts to help beautify our parks and natural spaces. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants and shirts, and bring rain gear, a hat and water bottle. Instruction, tools, gloves and small treats will be provided. We'll get familiar with the nuances of supporting outdoor projects and leave prepared to lead one of the many projects we host monthly or through special events like MLK Weekend!
