Growing Fresh, Local Vegetables for Hunger Relief (County CROPS)

Agency: Multnomah County CROPS

Description:

Join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Greater Portland volunteer leader. No advance training or ongoing commitment required, so sign up and participate in a project that fits your schedule. Need help signing up? Call 503-200-3355.

County CROPS is an emergency food garden grown on underutilized Multnomah County surplus property that will be farmed to grow fresh, local, organically grown produce for hungry Oregon families. Our produce will be distributed through hunger relief organizations like the Oregon Food Bank network and SnowCap to provide hunger relief to our local community during the current economic crisis. Join us for a day of good ol’ fashioned, get your hands dirty garden work all for the benefit of the Oregon Food Bank.

We are maintaining this two-acre plot across the street from McMenamins Edgefield on the site of the old poor farm (“The Pig Farm”) for the next 2 years. Come help us make the sophomore year of this project a huge success. Bring your gloves, some nice sturdy shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather, your strong back, and a dose of flexibility as we assemble for a few hours of work. We encourage skilled gardeners as well as garden novices to join us. There will be work for every skill level and plenty of opportunities to learn basic organic gardening skills.

What do you need to bring with you?  Water and a snack for yourself!

What should you wear? Gardening gloves, boots, long pants, hat with a brim.  No open toe shoes please.  We want everyone to have a safe and fun time at the CROPS farm.  So, please come prepared!  Thanks
