Domestic Violence Response Team Volunteer Advocate (age 18+) Referral

The Hillsboro Police Department’s Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) is recruiting for new volunteers.

The DVRT is a Volunteer Advocacy Program which provides direct services to victims of domestic violence at the scene of the incident, by providing safety planning, information and referrals to victims of crimes. In addition to working with victims at the scene, advocates also make follow-up phone calls to help victims after reported domestic violence incidents.

Volunteer Advocates cover 8-hour “on call” shifts, and respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to calls within the Hillsboro city limits. Volunteers commit to three or more eight hour shifts a month, as well as a monthly two-hour team meeting.

Volunteer advocates in this program are regularly involved in situations that that are physically and emotionally intense, and must have the ability to work independently under high stress situations while following specific policies and procedures.

Volunteers for the Hillsboro Police Department must be at least 18 years of age, be able to successfully complete a background check, which includes both reference checks and a criminal history check, and comply with confidentiality requirements and department policies and procedures.

Because of the unique nature of this program, DVRT volunteers are additionally required to successfully complete an eight-week 40 hour classroom training, and then successfully complete a probationary period before they are allowed to participate independently in the 8 hour shift “on call” rotation. In addition to the initial training, volunteers will have continuing in-service training provided to keep up-to-date with procedures victims experience through the criminal justice system and the civil justice system as well as local resources available to support them.
