Middle School Activity Volunteers (age 18+) Referral

IRCO SUN at Parkrose Middle School (PMS) is looking for dedicated volunteers committed to helping us strengthen the community.

Parkrose Middle School is located in outer NE Portland. We are a high-needs school with over 50 languages spoken and the majority of students qualifying for free lunch. SUN stands for Schools Uniting Neighborhoods. We connect families to resources, hold community events, and provide free activities for adults and youth. We are currently seeking volunteers to support fun and engaging classes for diverse 6th-8th grade students in the following areas: cooking, flag football, and tutoring. Each class will consist of approximately 15 students. Class materials and supplies will be provided, and a lead instructor will be in place. All activities are free to students.

Qualifications:
• Experience in teaching children and creating lesson plans
• Desire and ability to work with children and ensure an enriching, positive, safe setting
• An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual
• Excellent organization skills and interpersonal communication skills
• A cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team
• A willingness to ask questions for clarification and job completion
• All employees must submit criminal background check
• Spanish or other language skills a plus

Overall Summary of specific volunteer positions follow:

Position: Global Cooking Class Volunteer
IRCO Parkrose Middle School SUN Global Cooking Volunteers will provide assistance during our 9-week long cooking class. Students will learn the basics of food preparation, nutrition, and food safety, and focus on a different theme of regional cuisine each week. Duties include: teaching basic cooking skills and nutrition to students, leading small groups of students in creating and following recipes, assisting with program set up and clean up, supervising youth during meal time, offering support in keeping accurate and timely attendance records, and overseeing the implementation of cooking class curriculum. This class will meet Wednesdays from 1:30-3:00PM (1:00-3:00 with set up and clean up). Volunteers needed: 2-4 

Position: Flag Football Volunteer
A fast-paced, non-contact game centered around skill development on both offense and defense, flag football volunteers will help players learn the fundamentals of throwing and catching a football, running and maneuvering through a defense, zone and man to man coverage, and running offensive routes. All physical contact is strictly monitored for the safety of the players. Volunteers will interact with students during this hands on activity and act as mentors and role models. Other duties include providing assistance to individuals and small groups, offering support in keeping accurate and timely attendance records, and helping with set up and clean up. This class will meet Wednesdays from 1:30-3:00pm. Volunteers needed: 1-2

Position: Homework Club Volunteer
Homework Club is an opportunity for students to catch up on school work, and receive tutoring in specific subjects like English, Reading, Math, Science, and Humanities. We rely on volunteers to assist individual students and small groups. Duties include helping with classroom management, working with individuals and small groups as needed, offering support in keeping accurate and timely attendance records, providing tutorials and mentoring, and program set up and clean up. This class will meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 3:10PM-3:45PM. Volunteers needed: 2-6
