Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Join PP&R, Friends of Powell Butte and other community volunteers in completing important restoration projects on Powell Butte. Projects include trail work, ivy and other invasive species removal, fence work and possibly planting, mulching or watering native plants. No experience necessary! Wear sturdy shoes (or rubber boots/waders), long pants and shirts, and bring rain gear, a hat and water bottle. Instruction, tools, gloves and small treats will be provided.

Volunteers must be at least age 14 (without adult supervision) and volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign our liability form.

Meeting location & additional project details:

Saturday, August 13th: 
Meeting location: Holgate Blvd. entrance
Project: Trail work: decommissioning trails, maintaining signage.

Meet at: Holgate Blvd., just east of SE 136th. Turn east onto Holgate from SE 136th and follow to end of the road. Parking is alongside Holgate Blvd. Take care not to block neighbor driveways. Volunteers will be walking up to 5 miles during the event, so arrive before 9:00 AM to make sure you meet up with the group.

Tri-met bus: #17 (SE 136th & Holgate Blvd. stop) Walk east—towards the Butte—on Holgate to Gates Park entrance.

Bike/Walk the Springwater Corridor trail: Exit the trail at SE 136th and bike north to Holgate Blvd. Turn right onto Holgate Blvd. and follow to end of the road at base of Butte. 

Saturday, September 10th: 
Meeting location: Ellis St. entrance
Project: Trail work: decommissioning trails, maintaining signage.

Meet at: SE Ellis and SE 145th. From Foster Road or Powell Blvd., turn north (from Foster) or south (from Powell) onto SE 136th. Turn east (only option) onto SE Ellis Street. Turn right onto SE 139th and left onto SE Ellis. Follow until the end of the road at the base of the Butte. Park along SE Ellis (preferred) or SE 145th. Please take care not to block neighbors’ driveways.​

Tri-met bus: #17 (SE 136th & Holgate Blvd stop) Walk .4 mile south on SE 136th, .1 mile south on SE 139th and then .3 mile east on Ellis Street.

Bike/Walk the Springwater Corridor trail: Exit the trail at SE 145th and bike north on SE 145th. Ellis Street entrance will be on your right.  

Portland Parks and Recreation - Natural Resources East manages natural areas on the east side of Portland.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to attend this project; Volunteers age 14-17 may attend without an adult, if a youth volunteer release form is presented that has been signed by a parent or guardian.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed.
