Strength Programs

Want to help women feel confident, strong, and empowered?

WomenStrength is a free violence prevention program with a 35 year success rate of teaching holistic self-defense to women and teenage girls all over Portland. This unique program was one of the first free rape prevention programs in the country. Classes and co-ed safety workshops are offered to schools, community centers and community organizations. The program is operated with only one  full-time employee and 25-30 volunteer instructors.

Topics covered in WomenStrength classes include: safety planning and prevention skills, assertiveness and boundary setting techniques as well physical self-defense skills.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the administration and operations of the  program.  Tasks include, but are not limited to, confirming class enrollments, data entry, filing, helping to organize and oversee publicity events at fairs and festivals, soliciting donations, assisting with the coordination of classes and  programs and specific projects.

The  ideal volunteer has effective communication and social skills, is comfortable working with the general public, enjoys working on events and fundraising, and is computer literate and able to use basic computer programs and software.

What this program offers volunteers and interns: The opportunity to work in the Family Services Division of the Portland Police Bureau, attend on site in-service monthly trainings, take free holistic self-defense classes, work with women and teenage girls all over Portland and be part of a team of strong women who have dedicated their time to reducing crime and violence in our communities.

Commitment: 6 mths to 1 year, working a minimum of 8 hrs per week.

Opportunity Requirements:
