"Happy Feet" Medical Volunteers (age 18+) Referral

At Operation Nightwatch, we are seeking Medical Volunteers to generally assist about 15-25 guests (out of approx 60-200 guests) on any given night offering OTC meds, providing general assessments, stabilizing wound care, ortho support with splinting, ankle/knee supports. We offer differential diagnoses (if within your scope) and instructions as appropriate and when useful. We have an AED and oxygen for emergency needs.  We do not do any invasive treatments aside from diabetic testing and superficial splinter removal. When appropriate, we make referrals to hospital/clinics and will arrange 911/cab transport PRN. We assess guests subtly for potential psych issues and help staff support guests in psychological, alcohol or addiction situations. When we have medical providers on duty, we offer foot clinic for approximately 10-12 guests (soak, wash, pedicure, wound & callous care, massage, giving socks and new shoes when possible).

We are NOT a clinic but more a First Aide offering with the benefit of health care provider knowledge base. Healthcare providers can include RN, Pharm tech, Physician, EMT, Paramedics, CNA etc).

Our approach is somewhat unique, trying to be about serving in radical hospitality rather than just providing services and expertise. Though ecumenically based we are not proselytizers and do not directly do faith work. Our goal is to heal the ambivalence and cattle prodding our guests experience in many other venues. It's quite organic and hard to verbalize.

We dress for the occasion and the most appropriate dress is casual grunge, loose top/jeans (NO SCRUBS or uniforms PLEASE) we want to be pros but not make our guests feel uncomfortable.

Volunteers learn compassion and caring by listening to the patient’s story and concerns. Volunteers learn to respect our guests by giving them respect and undivided attention. Volunteers learn to ask questions of our guests to give the opportunity to find out more them. And finally, as volunteers, we get the opportunity to share the gifts we have been given.
