Help with the Fort Vancouver Book Sale (age 8+) *MLK Weekend 2018*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About:
With thirteen libraries, two express libraries and two bookmobiles, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District provides information resources and services, and community and cultural events for a population of more than 425,000 residents.  The service area is more than 4,200 square miles and includes farm, open range and national forest lands, communities along the Columbia River, small towns and expanding urban and industrial areas.

Project Overview:
This is a GREAT opportunity to help us recycle donated or no longer needed library books into good homes where they can continue to be read. This book sale makes books affordable for teachers (in class libraries), home schoolers, seniors on a fixed income, and anyone that can't afford bookstore prices. The proceeds, from the sale, go to support Summer Reading Programs which keeps kids reading so their skills are growing and ready for the following school year (rather than falling behind). It also helps preschoolers prepare to attend school. Volunteers that help with this event bring BIG impact to the community! This activity is environmentally friendly by recycling books into good homes, helping families/educators in the community with affordable reading, and raising funds to keep kids skills ready for school!

Volunteers will assist with helping to re-stock books as needed, assist customers in finding books they are looking for, folding down boxes, counting books for the cashier, etc...

Important Info:

  • Wear comfortable, neat clothing, with pockets for your valuables. Please leave purses, totes or backpacks with valuables at home since we have no place to lock them up.

Project Requirements:

  • You must be 8 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. In the spirit of creating an atmosphere where people from all parts of our community are coming together to volunteer,

Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual MLK Weekend of Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org
