Smell The Roses And Tend Them Too! (age 16+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden is a nonprofit whose mission is to preserve, protect and enhance Peninsula Park Rose Garden as a heritage resource for all generations. Founded in 2012, the organization received its nonprofit status in 2014. Members of the Friends group volunteer their time and energy to enhance and maintain the beauty of this historic garden for the benefit of the Piedmont neighborhood. This is an outdoor volunteer experience so be prepared for rain or shine! * Please wear long pants and long sleeves* Gloves and tools will be provided however feel free to bring your own. Below is our schedule, please review our seasonal activities below so you are prepared or the volunteer experience offered:
WINTER: Janurary - March : Winter pruning and Planting Day
SPRING- April and May : Weeding
SUMMER- June 1st until end of September 30th : Deadheading
FALL- October - early December : Pruning

Note: Deadheading roses consists in removing dead roses to promote growth of new roses. Prune back to a five-leaflet leaf, cutting at an angle, just above a leaflet facing outward. You will receive training on this activity.
This is Portland’s first public rose garden and is a classic French sunken garden centered around a fountain. Its 5,000 roses are formally enclosed in rows of boxwood.! The Garden is home to Portland’s official rose, Madame Caroline Testout, which was planted by the thousands along city streets in the early 1900s, ensuring Portland could rightfully claim to be the City of Roses. Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 10 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above.
