Teach English as an Adult Literacy Tutor (virtual) (age 18+) Referral


Multnomah County Library's Adult Literacy program continues to match tutors with adult learners for virtual tutoring sessions during the pandemic. We have a particular need for tutors who speak Mandarin and those willing to volunteer with beginning ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners who are available to meet in the evening (6-8 pm) or Saturdays. 

Here is some basic information about tutoring:

  • Teaching or tutoring experience is helpful
  • Willingness to commit 1-2 hours/week for 6 months or more is required
  • Comfort using Zoom, WhatsApp or Facetime, or a willingness to learn is essential
  • An orientation and minimal training will be provided
  • This opportunity is completely virtual and volunteers do not report in person

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Assist learners individually
  • Engage learners using open-ended questions to determine their specific goals -Help English language learners develop speaking and listening skills using learning activities provided by library staff
  • Assist learners to develop reading comprehension and writing skills; offer literacy learning activities and/or assist individuals with reading materials that they have selected; offer to read learners’ written work and provide constructive feedback and encouragement
  • Be well prepared and offer learning activities that are based on the interests of the learners; offer to review work that learners have completed independently
  • Share knowledge of a subject such as English, history, mathematics, science and social studies
  • Demonstrate ESL and literacy websites that provide learning activities
  • Record and report session attendance and your own volunteer time

Special Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years or older
  • High school or GED diploma
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Proficiency or willingness to gain proficiency in Google Meet, Zoom or other platform preferred by learner
  • Assist English language learners in reading and writing
  • Assist adult learners in basic math skills as preparation for the GED
  • Teaching or tutoring experience preferred
  • Empathy and a friendly demeanor
  • Exceptional communication and active listening skills
  • Proficiency in basic math
  • Proficiency using email and word processing
  • Patience, flexibility, and creativity
  • Willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students
  • Respects diversity and appreciates diverse learning abilities
  • Commitment to help individuals reach personal educational goals
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other volunteers and staff
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check
