Join SOLVE to clean up MLK Blvd! (all ages) *MLK Weekend 2020*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About:
SOLVE's mission is to bring Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a legacy of stewardship.

As SOLVE turns 50, we have a lot to celebrate. A half-century of bringing people together, from all walks of life and every corner of the state. Of getting people out and answering the call. Cleaning up our beaches, parks, neighborhoods and natural spaces. Reaching out, digging in and picking up. By restoring vitality, planting new beginnings and keeping invaders at bay. Developing diverse relationships. By partnering, collaborating and engaging. Honoring the pioneers of our past and building on their legacy. Together. With an unstoppable force of volunteers, thirty thousand strong and one hundred percent committed.

We are individuals, businesses, neighbors, families and friends. These are our communities. Our unique places. Our rivers and streams, lakes and mountains, land and sea. Our pride and joy. It’s in our nature to protect it for generations to come. Together, we are taking care of Oregon.

Project Description:
Join SOLVE for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event!

Spend your Martin Luther King Jr. Day with SOLVE giving back to the community through service volunteering. The MLK Jr. Day of Service event will be kicked off at Irving Park in Northeast Portland. Volunteers will be sent to the area surrounding MLK Boulevard, picking up litter and preventing it from entering our waterways. Every piece of litter picked up counts, and we need your help!

All cleanup supplies will be provided, just come dressed for the weather with closed-toed shoes and a filled reusable water bottle.

Important Info:
The work you will be doing is outdoors so please dress for the weather. Closed-toed shoes are required. If possible, please bring your own reusable work gloves and a repurposed bag or bucket for litter collection. However, cleanup supplies will be available to anyone who needs them. Bring your own filled, reusable water bottle.

We'll be giving a brief educational lesson on the impacts of litter and how trash travels from local neighborhoods like the one we'll be working in, out to the ocean and even to other countries. Our projects also serve as hands-on service learning opportunities, exposing new volunteers to the issues we face and to the benefits of working face to face with other local volunteers.

*NOTE: Any volunteer needing proof of their service hours (court-ordered volunteers, students, etc.) must bring all needed documentation with them to the event to be signed by the event coordinator on site.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers of all ages are welcome to attend this project with an adult; volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project on their own.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project.

  • Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual MLK Weekend of Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed.
