Day of serVOZ (age 16+) *MLK Weekend 2020*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Our Mission: Voz is a worker-led organization that empowers diverse day laborers and immigrants to improve their working conditions and protect civil rights through leadership development, organizing, education and economic opportunity.

For this service project:Be ready to engage with local day laboreres and  scratch your community outreach bone by canvassing the local neighborhood. Most of the group will go out with VOZ staff and post fliers in the Portland community. Those who cannot flier will help us clean up the community surrounding the MLK, Jr. Worker Center.

More about our work

We fight for justice for day laborers through three major programs: the MLK Jr. Worker Center, Economic empowerment, Leadership development, and Grassroots organizing. The MLK Jr. Worker Center connects approximately 600 day-laborers per year to over 4,000 local employers. In 2018, day laborers earned almost $500,000 in wages through jobs found at the Worker Center. The Worker Center is a safe, dignified space for the day laborer community to gather in search of work. We offer workforce development skills, health, and safety training. We also guarantee labor protections such as a $17 minimum wage, and resources for victims of wage theft and more.

- Economic empowerment
Day laborers face multiple barriers to stable, dignified, and fair employment. We provide direct economic empowerment opportunities by connecting day laborers to jobs at the MLK Jr. Worker Center. We offer accessible workforce development opportunities that build skills and knowledge so that day laborers can earn higher wages and achieve long-term economic stability.

- Leadership development

We believe that lasting and transformative social change must come from community members on the front lines. Voz was founded by day laborers organizing themselves for better working conditions on the street corners, and we stay true to our roots by continuing to build new community leaders, and by operating a worker-led organization.

- Grassroots organizing

Justice for day laborers is a community struggle! We mobilize community members in defense of immigrant and worker rights by organizing teams of rapid responders and legal observers, and by demanding that public officials pass legislation that protects and empowers workers and immigrants.
