Provide Radical Hospitality to Marginalized Communities (age 16+) Referral

Volunteers at Rahab's Sisters provide hot meals, hygiene, and camp supplies to our unsheltered and otherwise underserved neighbors in the Montavilla neighborhood. Additionally, we provide a safe space for our guests of marginalized genders to gather for fellowship, creating a deep sense of community between guests and volunteers alike. Please bring a face mask if possible, but one can be provided.

On Friday nights, volunteers are assigned to socially-distanced stations to fulfill the needs of our guests (all shifts are from 6:00pm-10:00pm):
-Outdoor Greeters help facilitate a safely-distanced line, take hygiene supply orders, and inform guests of any services we or any local agencies are offering (computer access, showers, etc.)
-Indoor Greeters receive guests at the front door from behind a table, serve any drinks available, and communicate with other volunteers inside to receive guest meals and hygiene supplies
-Hygiene Bag Fillers take hygiene supply request sheets from Outdoor Greeters and fulfill requests, passing bags of supplies to the Indoor Greeter
-Food Bag Fillers receive boxed meals from the Kitchen Team and place them into bags of snacks and drinks, passing them on to the Indoor Greeter as needed
-Special Request Fillers search for specific clothing and camp supply items requested and keep track of supply counts throughout the night
-Kitchen Team Volunteers heat and box prepared meals. Kitchen Team should consist of 2-3 volunteers preferably from the same household, as quarters are tighter
-Backyard Volunteers facilitate a safely-distanced space in the church's backyard for guests of marginalized genders to sit and eat, guide guests one-by-one to the church's restrooms, and sanitize restrooms and chairs after use

Sunday nights are broken into two on-site shifts:
-Supply Fillers assemble snack and drink bags and portion out camp and hygiene supplies to be used by the Mobile Camp Outreach teams. Supply Filler shifts are from 5:00pm-7:00pm
-Mobile Camp Outreach Teams must have a vehicle and will travel to nearby houseless camps to deliver food and supplies. Outreach volunteers must be comfortable interacting with houseless neighbors and maintaining social distancing guidelines when in the field. Outreach shifts are from 6:45pm-~9:00pm
-Kitchen Team heats and boxes prepared food, packing into coolers from transport

Rahab's Sisters believes in a model of Radical Hospitality toward each other and our guests, emphasizing fostering community over top-down charity. We prioritize the safety and respite of female-identified guests and guests of marginalized genders by welcoming them in to the church's yard to eat and recharge, but we offer our supplies to people of all gender expressions. Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet the immediate physical needs of our guests, but the real magic of Rahab's Sisters is in the trust that you'll gain, the stories you'll hear, and the non-material support you'll offer as you continue to join us. Our guests are our friends and neighbors, and through acknowledging them as equals we begin to see the endless possibilities true community can bring.

Volunteers at Rahab's Sisters will learn much about the hardships and joys of the city's most marginalized communities as they interact with guests. They will naturally learn about city government's supportive services, other organizations working alongside us, and where there are service gaps yet to be filled.
