Opportunity Details

Outdoor Stewardship at Whitaker Ponds (age 6+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Do you think nature is only found outside the city? Think again! Lend a hand in this Northeast Portland Parks Natural Area and enjoy your Thursday evening working outside and meeting others in our community!

About this Opportunity
Join Portland Parks & Recreation and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for an evening of stewardship at this unique urban natural area. We will be removing introduced invasive plants like ivy and blackberry, and pruning along the trail.

Registered volunteers: Please sign in ahead of time here and also complete this brief online health survey before the event: https://c19oregon.com/. If you are not able to register online, please contact stewardship coordinator Yoko Silk directly.

What to Bring and Wear
Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring your own face covering, personal water bottle, and snacks. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools (loppers/pruners), gloves, and face coverings, however PP&R will provide these as needed.

Questions?
Exact location details will be sent to you by the volunteer coordinator prior to the project. Contact Yoko Silk with any questions at yoko.silk@portlandoregon.gov or by calling/texting 503-278-1341.

COVID-19 Information:

The novel coronavirus ("COVID-19") is a contagious and potentially life-threatening disease.  Reducing the spread of COVID-19 in our community is a shared responsibility. In an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at Hands On volunteer activities, all volunteers are required to:

  • Follow all COVID safety-rules at their volunteer site or project
  • Wash their hands, at a minimum, before and after their volunteering
  • Maintain physical distancing while volunteering, to the extent practicable
  • Wear a cloth or disposable face covering at all times while volunteering.

Hands On appreciates your interest in volunteering to help our community in this time of extraordinary need. As part of some volunteer activities, you may risk exposure to COVID-19. If you or any member of your household is experiencing any symptom of COVID-19, or has exhibited any symptom in the past 14 days, please do not sign up for a volunteer activity at this time. Please contact the Opportunity Coordinator if you have any questions about Hands On’s COVID-19 safety rules and the expectations for volunteers.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 6 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 10 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • If you plan to bring your children or other guests to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project: Youth Volunteer Release Form

  • While groups are welcome to join many of our regularly scheduled stewardship events, please contact the event coordinator listed in the description before arriving with a large group. This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work. We are also available to schedule special service events at your group's convenience during the week or on weekends. Learn more about PP&R programs for groups here.
