Opportunity Details

Community Tool Librarian (age 18+) Referral

The Tool Library is run by wonderful volunteers and would not exist without the help of people like you! It's very easy to help out, and there will always be another friendly volunteer there with you. It's a great way to meet your neighbors and maybe learn a little bit about tools and gardening too! We focus our efforts heavily on food-growing supplies and tools, to promote self-sufficiency and food security in our communities.

Tool Librarian Volunteers will receive training on tool library operations and safety procedures to minimize the spread of COVID.

Tasks can include:
- helping members check tools in and out
- signing up new members
- answering the phone and emails
- organizing seed library and tools
- find the right tools for members, answering any questions
- opening and closing the tool library
- taking in donations
- orienting people to the space and safety protocols

Some folks sign up for just 1 shift on occasion, others sign up for 1-2 shifts a month. This greatly helps to share the work and keep the tool library open. No knowledge of tools necessary, just a willingness to show up and help!

Questions? Email librarian@greenlents.org, or visit bit.ly/toollibrarysignup to sign up for a New Librarian Orientation now.

Shifts - Saturdays, 9:45am-11:30am, 11:30am-1:15pm (sign up for one or both); Wednesdays, 5:45pm-8:15pm

Tool Doctor - this shift is devoted to tool repair during regular open hours.

Please wear close-toed shoes, as this is a tool warehouse. Heavy lifting may be required. The space is unheated and uncooled, so please dress according to the weather. No water or bathroom on site, though there is access to two bathrooms nearby (locked, private). Masks are encouraged to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, but not required.

Green Lents' mission is "To cultivate a thriving, resilient, and environmentally-just community through engagement, education and collective action in Lents and outer SE Portland, Oregon"

The Tool Library's vision is to create Access for All to tools for home repair and gardening, based on a sharing, free, economy. "Access Over Ownership" means that resources are shared, affordable, and producing less waste, creating a community-care culture.
