Work with Refugee Youth! HW Club Coordinator at Kateri Park (age 18+) Referral

Help refugee kids be successful and volunteer as a HW Club Coordinator! The kids who live here have learned how to speak, read and write English, but academically many of them are struggling. Their parents often don’t speak English and can’t help them with their schoolwork. That’s why we offer the "Homework Club" for elementary, middle, and high school students Monday through Thursday each afternoon during the school year.

The program takes place during the school year - we follow Portland Public’s schedule - Monday-Thursday from 3:00-5:00. Volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes early. This year homework club starts September 4 th and ends May 30 th. The format is fairly simple; we have the volunteers sit at a table, if the kids need help then they are there to offer it and if not the volunteer is there to make sure they are actually doing their homework. The kids are in grades K-12 and occasionally we get some of the college students that live on the property.

Kateri Park and its sister complex Esperanza Court are an affordable housing community, located just off Powell on 28th Avenue. Many lower income families live here, including many refugee families. They come from Somalia, Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Afghanistan and more. Who knew there was a little United Nations right here in SE Portland! Our refugees and immigrant parents haven’t had much (if any) schooling and many don’t speak English. This means they can’t help their kids with school assignments, so many of the kids are struggling. This is why we have Homework Club.

HW Club Coordinator helps the program coordinator ensure that the after school program runs smoothly. This consists of making sure the room is setup and breakdown before and after the program, taking attendance of the students and volunteers, making sure school work is getting done, and matching volunteers with students. The coordinator will also help the students with work as needed. This position can be offered as an internship.
