Family Field Trip Day! (age 10+) Referral

Family Field Trip Day is a twice year outdoor adventure that invites the community to discover the wonder of nature in their very own backyard - it's like four hours of Outdoor School for the whole family!

Columbia Springs' 100-acre site will host various hands-on learning stations, craft projects, nature hikes, and more as a way to help families connect to the natural world. Many of these learning stations are the same fun activities provided to the more than 5,000 local students who visit our site as part of their environmental science education each year.

This event epitomizes our mission to connect the community to the natural world and inspire stewardship through learning, exploration, and discovery.

Volunteers are needed as assistants at the various learning stations, to help with registration and general event help, and both before and after the event to help with set-up and clean-up. Learning stations include macroinvertabrate hunting in wetlands, forest hikes, engineering healthy watersheds with a stream table, and more!

Three hour shifts are available from 9:30am-12:30pm and noon-3pm (unless noted otherwise below). Some additional flexibility may be available. Spend a beautiful day outside sharing nature with children! Volunteer assignments include:

Registration Assistance (3 volunteers)
We are expecting 300-400 guests at this event and we need 3 to 4 more individuals to help us staff the registration/check-in booth. Training will be provided at the beginning of the shift.

Education Station Assistants (6-8 volunteers)
We have three engaging hands-on science stations that need the help of 1-2 volunteers to assist the educators at the stations, particularly with crowd management and assisting the kids with the activities. These stations are: macroinvertabrate investigations in the wetlands; fish dissections and anatomy; and watershed learning with the stream table*. Trainings will be provided at the beginning of each shift. No teaching experience necessary, just a willingness to learn, have fun, and work with families. *Stream table shift from 11am-2pm.

Craft Station Assistants (5-6 volunteers)
Volunteers are needed to help facilitate crafts at two stations a coloring/stamping art tent and with fish printing. Trainings will be provided at the beginning of each shift. Again no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn, have fun, and work with families.

Puppet Show (1-2 volunteers)
New this year is our salmon puppet show, volunteers are needed to put on short 10-15 puppet shows. No need to memorize, scripts will be provided. If you enjoy storytelling, this is the spot for you!

General Event Help (2-3 volunteers)
No event would run smoothly without the help of a few floaters who are up for anything!

Frank the Fish Mascot (1-2 volunteers)
Be adored by hundreds of kids! Done our “Frank the Fish” mascot outfit for a few short shifts and you’ll be the star of the party!

Clean-Up (3-4 volunteers) 2-5pm
Volunteers are needed to assist with helping to tear down and clean-up the event.

Note: Volunteers should wear comfortable outdoor clothes, closed-toe shoes are encouraged, and appropriate clothing for working with young kids.
