TeamWorks: Let's Get Our Hands On Some Racial Justice (age 18+) *Hands On*
Join a TeamWorks team of volunteers for a series of done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Greater Portland TeamWorks Leader. TeamWorks offers volunteers the opportunity to make a slightly longer-term commitment to volunteering, delve into a topic or issue-area, and get to know other volunteers in the process.
Let’s Get Our Hands On Some Racial Justice!
How does your race or ethnicity affect the way you experience Portland? What actions can we take as individuals and groups to combat racism in our lives and our communities? What might it be like to volunteer for the purposes of racial justice? How do gender, class, disability and other identities complicate our understandings of race and racism?
This summer, join our team as we work to address these questions through a series of facilitated race dialogue sessions and volunteer projects. Through our dialogue sessions, we'll explore the language we use to understand race and racism, discuss the intersectionality of identity, and attend one of the monthy Race Talks at the McMenamin's Kennedy School. Working with local organizations to address issues of racial justice, we'll help the YWCA clean and organize its shelter space, get our hands dirty in the Wisdom of the Elder's community garden, help build affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity, and more!
Co-facilitators Donna Maxey (Race Talks founder) and Harold McNaron (TeamWorks Leader) will provide structure and support for the team’s experience. Join us!
**To provide a rich experience for all participants, we are seeking a diverse group of volunteers; people of color are especially encouraged to join the TeamWorks and participate in the dialogue. Even if the team appears full, add yourself to the waiting list and/or email Harold with your interest to see if there might still be space for you: haroldmcnaron@gmail.com**
What is TeamWorks? TeamWorks teams consist of approximately 10-15 individuals, led by a Hands On trained volunteer leader, who commit to volunteering for every project in the series, so please carefully check the schedule below before signing up! Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks. If you know in advance you'd have to miss one of the projects, let us know and you might still be eligible to join the team. Questions can be directed to Harold McNaron, haroldmcnaron@gmail.com.
