TeamWorks: Explore the Arts! (age 16+) *Hands On*

Join a TeamWorks team of volunteers for a series of done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Greater Portland TeamWorks Leader. TeamWorks offers volunteers the opportunity to make a slightly longer-term commitment to volunteering, delve into a topic or issue-area, and get to know other volunteers in the process.

What do you get when you cross a Volunteer with Art? An Arteer? A VoluntART? How about an exciting opportunity to volunteer with Portland area organizations focused on keeping the arts alive and thriving in the community? The VoluntARTS will participate in a fun variety of projects from creating handmade cards for homebound seniors to helping the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra play it loud! Join us as we tour the historic Hollywood Theatre, craft upcycled jewelry with new social enterprise upstART, lead art projects with refugee children, and sort craft supplies at SCRAP.

In addition to all of these great projects, we will look at how art can be used to foster social change and bring people together through discussions and readings. Whether you are a contemporary art aficionado or you cannot tell the difference between the almond toast crayon and the applesauce crayon, please join us! Check out the schedule below, and get signed up for this one-of-a-kind volunteer experience!

What is TeamWorks? TeamWorks teams consist of approximately 10-15 individuals, led by a Hands On trained volunteer leader, who commit to volunteering for every project in the series, so please carefully check the schedule below before signing up! Signing up for the FIRST session will sign you up for the entire TeamWorks. If you know in advance you'd have to miss one of the projects, let us know and you might still be eligible to join the team. Questions can be directed to Melia Tichenor, melia@handsonportland.org or 503.200.3370.

Thursday, May 31st: Upcycle old Jewelry with UpstART
6:30pm - 8:30pm
St. David's Episcopal Church, SE Portland
UpstART PDX is a new social enterprise whose mission is to fight human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of all kinds by providing creative and income-generating opportunities to women marginalized by the sex industry, homelessness, or drug addiction. UpstART does this through collecting and repurposing unwanted jewelry, fabric, and other fashion accessories. We'll get to know this new organization in town as we help them sort through donated supplies, and then try our hand up-cycling ourselves to turn the sorted jewelry into new and improved pieces!

Sunday, June 3rd: Tour The Hollywood Theatre and Spread the Word
12:00pm - 3:30pm
Hollywood Theatre, NE Portland
Originally established in 1926, The Hollywood Theatre is now a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and connect the community through the art of film, while preserving a historic Portland landmark. We'll tour the theatre and learn more about its history, as well as the nonprofit's plans to restore the building's marquee back to its original gradeur. After the tour and a pizza lunch (provided), we'll split into smaller groups to drop off flyers in the surrounding neighborhoods to raise awareness for this restoration project and the hollywood theatre's nonprofit programming. Prizes to the team who drops off the most!

Wednesday, June 6th: Recycle Art Supplies at SCRAP
4:00pm - 6:00pm
SCRAP, NE Portland
Do you love art, craft & environmental sustainability? We'll be joining in on a fun work party doing a variety of projects to help SCRAP fulfill their goal of diverting usable items away from the landfill and into the hands of our community at a very low cost. Who knows what we may discover as we sort, organize and tidy up the retail store & workshop room. Guaranteed to be a creatively enlightening experience!

Wednesday, June 13th: Dinner & Discussion: Arts in Portland
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Restaurant TBD
We'll meet up for dinner at a local area restaurant to discuss the many ways art is being used in Portland to foster social change, bring people together, and provide a creative outlet to those young and old. Each team member will bring an interesting article, fact, and/or resource to share with the group, centered on current arts-related news in the city or pertaining to the work of arts-based nonprofits not already explored during the TeamWorks.

Sautrday, June 16th: Lead Arts & Crafts for Kids at Tabor Farmer's Market / Final TeamWorks Wrap-Up
9:30am - 2:30pm
Café au Play, SE Portland
The small Mt. Tabor Farmer's Market pops up each Saturday throughout the summer on the grounds of Cafe au Play, a nonprofit coffeehouse that offers an environment where activities, community, and coffee create connections. As a family-oriented space, Cafe au Play encourages kid-friendly entertainment at the market, from music to puppets to interactive art projects. On June 16th, we'll be the ones dishing up the entertainment in the form of a fun and hands-on craft activity of our choosing! After crafting with kids for the a few hours, we'll round up for our final discussion and TeamWorks wrap-up to debrief our experience and share our arts-based intentions for the future.
