Beautify Lone Fir Cemetery (age 8+) *Hands On

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Nestled in Southeast Portland, Lone Fir Cemetery is more than just a cemetery. It’s also one of Oregon’s most treasured historic places and Portland’s second-largest arboretum.

Volunteers will enjoy the beauty and history of Lone Fir Cemetery while they help keep the grounds up by doing a variety of weeding, pruning, and groundskeeping work.

The cemetery is a 30.5 acre hands-on outdoor museum that represents Oregon's cultural and natural heritage. At 156 years old, the cemetery is the permanent residence for Asa Lovejoy, James Hawthorne, Donald MacLeay and many other prominent Portland families. Lone Fir Cemetery is owned and operated by Metro Parks and Greenspaces.

Lone Fir Cemetery is a Metro property and is also supported by Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery, which was founded in 2000 and is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to education, restoration and preservation efforts for the cemetery. Friends of Lone Fir is a volunteer organization that provides a number of services and events at Portland's oldest cemetery. Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery have monument repair workshops, clean-up days, and historic tours and strive to raise awareness to overcome the inevitable deterioration that many of America's oldest cemeteries face. The Friends of Lone Fir seek to honor the deceased and their survivors through encouraging community involvement in this treasured space.
