Community Action

Since 1965, Community Action has fostered the vision of a thriving local community where all residents are empowered to live with dignity, security, and resilience. Leading with this vision, our programs invest directly into the community by connecting people to the opportunities and essential services they need to overcome conditions of poverty. We serve over 30,000 Washington County residents each year with programs that are focused in four core areas:
  • Emergency Assistance: helping struggling families pay their rent, avoid evictions, keep the lights and heat on, and prevent them from becoming homeless.
  • Housing Stability: helping clients find and maintain stable housing with renter support strategies, providing emergency shelter, and preserving affordable housing stock through energy conservation improvements.
  • Early Childhood Development: providing Head Start programs to ensure children (infant – 5 years) have safe, stable, nurturing environments that foster healthy development and prepare them for kindergarten and supporting the quality of community-based childcare.
  • Family Development: helping families increase their assets and reach their goals through education, coaching, and advocacy.
