Mission: Outside In helps homeless youth and other marginalized people move towards improved health and self-sufficiency. Through education, employment training, housing, and health care services, we start youth on a path to transform their lives, supporting them and helping them build the confidence and skills they need to enact positive change in their lives and in their communities. By assisting Outside In to provide nutrition to homeless, at-risk youth, you help build the foundation for our clients' health, development, and self-sufficiency.
For centuries, humans have been connecting over food and meals. This is a unique and invaluable opportunity to connect with underserved and at-risk youth experiencing homelessness in Portland, to connect with incredible like-minded community members that (like you) have joined our efforts, and to connect with the compassionate staff members that are the backbone of Outside In!
Comprised of staff and volunteers, together we ensure homeless youth consume hot, healthy meals while cultivating a safe, welcoming environment.
Come and be a part of our unique culinary community! Whether you are a competent chef or an occasional cook, all skill levels are welcome! Grab a friend and volunteer with them - we welcome anyone interested in joining forces with us. Show our clients you care by spending a couple of hours a week connecting with them and nourishing them with delicious food.
Commitment:
- Volunteers choose one regular, weekly meal shift
- We ask volunteers to commit to 6 months or 100 hours of volunteering
- Volunteers must complete our application and interview process before volunteering. This is a referral opportunity only, please respond to this post or contact the Volunteer Manager to continue the onbaording process.
We offer volunteer shifts Monday through Friday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Outside In's Café is located in downtown Portland.
Through this opportunity, you will:
- Learn to cook and/or improve your skills in the kitchen alongside Outside In's culinary-trained chefs.
- Learn about factors leading to homelessness and the challenges homeless youth face every day. Learn about nutrition and food instability in Portland and across a variety of communities.
- Connect and engage with young adult participants, which will enrich compassion, empathy, and understanding.
No Food Handler's Card required
Opportunity Requirements:
- Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older to participate in this opportunity
- Volunteers must complete our onboarding process, including submitting to a required background check.
COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement:
As a healthcare setting, Outside In falls under the state-wide requirements for all personnel to be vaccinated against COVID-19. During the application process, we will request proof of a COVID vaccine or the completion of an accepted exemption form. This information is confidential.
