About the Program
The mission of Friends of Tryon Creek, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire every community to identify, cultivate or reclaim their relationship with nature in this cherished urban forest. Since 1970, Friends of Tryon Creek have provided education and volunteer experiences at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.
About the Project
Join Friends of Tryon Creek to connect with and care for Tryon Creek State Natural Area. Depending on the season, Friends staff lead volunteers in removing ivy growing up mature trees, digging up blackberry along the ground, or planting and caring for new native trees and shrubs near the creek.
Volunteers are a key part in our efforts to enhance the overall health and resilience of the urban forest and community. Making up roughly 20% of the watershed and connecting to the main stem of the Willamette River, this work supports critical ecological habitat, as well as helps revitalize cultural use of the area.
Volunteer activities include hiking 1-2 miles from the Nature Center to the current project location, and using hand tools like clippers and shovels; Instructions, gloves, supervision, and tools are provided (feel free to bring your own gloves).
Project Requirements
- Age: Volunteers must be 14+; under 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
- Accessibility: Includes 1-2 mile hike and physical activity
- Dress code: Please wear comfotable close-toed shoes, and highly recommend long sleeves and long pants to protect from thorns, spikes, nettle, etc. Depending on weather, rain gear and/or sun protection (hat, sunscreen) recommended.
