Do you LOVE Clothes?? Be a Clothing Closet Assistant! (age 14+) Referral

We serve thousands of families each year and rely upon the help of volunteers to make this possible! Please help us continue to serve the community by volunteering with us. We are seeking a few excited individuals who would be willing to take on our clothing closet as a weekly volunteer project.

The shifts are Monday through Friday 9:30-11:30am and 12:30-2:30pm. This will require a commitment of a minimum of 1 shift, just 2 hours per week. Ideally your weekly commitment would be through October or longer, but this is flexible!

The Clothing Closet Assistant is responsible for assisting our clients through the free clothing closet using good customer service skills. This includes welcoming them, explaining how the clothing closet works, assisting in their selections, and weighing and bagging their clothing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet clients; make them feel welcome and comfortable

  • Explain what each client can receive based on the total people in their household 

  • Assist clients to make appropriate selections

  • Answer questions

  • Weigh and bag clothing and record weights on their paperwork, rounding off the weight to the highest number

  • Keep track of client’s cards/applications and file in the appropriate place

  • Hang and sort clothing as time allows

  • Additional duties may be assigned

Since 1923, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been providing emergency food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built an 90-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.

We offer food assistance six days a week at our North Portland warehouse as well as 24/7 through our partnership with the Portland Police Bureau who store food boxes at each police precinct that can be dispatched to people in need at any time. In addition to food relief we also offer new and gently used clothing at no charge.

Opportunity Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to participate in this opportunity; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
