Sunshine Division, volunteer to feed and clothe Portlanders in need
Sunshine Division is looking for dedicated and reliable food pantry and clothing room volunteers to work at either of our two locations, assisting clients during their visit as they shop for free food and clothing. Volunteer duties include stocking the food pantry, sorting and hanging clothing in the clothing room, and / or working directly with clients as they check in and out of each area, providing excellent customer service to those in need.
This is a volunteer job that you can do once a week, once a month or every day if you wanted to! We work with you to make a volunteer schedule that fits your volunteer needs and interests.
Locations and Hours
Main Warehouse: 687 N Thompson Street, Portland, open to clients Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm and Saturday, 9:30 am - 1:00 pm.
Outer SE Stark: 12436 SE Stark, Portland, open to clients Wednesday - Saturday, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm.
Volunteers tend to work the either the morning shift (9:00a - 11:30a) or the afternoon shift (12:30p - 3:30 p) but are welcome to work the entire day if they want to!
We are happy to help court-ordered volunteers fulfill needed hours of community service. Volunteer background checks occur on all volunteers over the age of 18 to ensure that all volunteers are working in a safe environment. Non-violent offenders are typcially approved for community service hours.
Volunteers will be working in a warehouse environment and will need to dress appropriately for such - closed-toe shoes, clothing that they're willing to get dusty and dirty, comfortable clothing that they can move around in. Volunteers learn sorting skills, customer service skills, how to help people that are food and clothing insecure and how to best think on their feet.
Since 1923, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been providing food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built a 94-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.
We offer food assistance six days a week at our warehouse and 24 hour food assistance through our partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, who store Sunshine Division food boxes at each police precinct to be dispatched at any time. We also provide no-cost, bulk food and food boxes to 20+ local hunger relief non-profits serving Clark, Clackamas, Washington, and Multnomah counties. In addition to food relief, we offer new and gently-used clothing in our on-site clothing room and fund new school clothes for low income children through our Izzy’s Kid’s program which pairs a Portland police officer with a child for a one-on-one shopping experience.
