Growing Gardens Seed Sorting and Winter Tool Prep (age 12+) *MLK Weekend 2019

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Volunteers will be helping to repackage bulk seeds and sort seed donations that will go out to families in our Home Gardens program. If there are enough people we will have some folks helping to clean and sharpen our tools that we use for building home gardens.

Growing Gardens uses the experience of growing food in schools, backyards and correctional facilities to cultivate healthy, equitable, communities. Since Growing Gardens’ inception in 1996, we have helped over 1,300 families start home gardens, ensuring fresh food access for over 4,500 adults and children. Since 2006, we have partnered with 14 schools to design and implement garden education programs for low-income elementary school children. We are currently running gardening programs in 14 of Oregon’s correctional facilities and two juvenile detention centers.

Over 800 inmates have graduated from the Lettuce Grow university-level sustainable gardening course, and 175 more have received certificates of completion from the Seed to Supper class. Using community-organizing principles that respect diversity, help identify common goals, teach problem-solving techniques and build skills for long-term project sustainability, we promote enduring participatory garden projects. Our years of data prove that our programs successfully increase fresh food access, reduce reliance on emergency food boxes, reduce grocery bills, increase children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables and increase civic engagement.
