Garden Volunteering To Fight Community Hunger (age 0+) Referral

Did you know that hunger has spiked by 260% in Portland since the start of the pandemic?! Well, now you can be a part of the solution!

NO previous gardening experience is required. ALL ages are welcome.

This summer, we plan to operate a flower stand to raise money for the organization, continue to plant crops and flowers in the garden, build new construction for organization on the farm, apply to/write grant applications, update our digital presence, and spread the word about our work to end hunger! Volunteers can help with any of these objectives or propose a different task too. In the end, volunteers finish feel important/needed and fulfilled by the work they do. The great contributions by our volunteers are heavily appreciated, both by Focus on Youth and by the those facing hunger in Portland. Volunteers learn a plethora of skills, including organic gardening, animal care, grant writing, fundraising, and advertising.

Since 2003, Focus on Youth has provided hands-on-learning, sustainable gardening, healthy cooking classes, science and photography classes, and mentoring for over 16,000 at-risk and homeless youth. Hunger in Oregon has spiked 260% with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and one in five homeless youth report going hungry each week. Our program, Seeds of Hope is decreasing food insecurity and improving nutrition for homeless youth by teaching them where food comes from, how to grow food through hands-on activities, and the importance of eating fresh produce.

Our volunteers grow over a ton of organic fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Past volunteers have donated thousands of pounds of produce to low-income seniors through the Neighborhood House food pantry. People of ALL ages are welcome to volunteer, and we have an array of tasks that could use your help. This summer, we plan to operate a flower stand to raise money for the organization, continue to plant crops on new land, build new construction for organization on the farm, apply to/write grant applications, update our digital presence, and spread the word about our work to end hunger! Seeds of Hope connects youth with nature and the joy of growing their own food while giving them the ability to take on leadership roles within the community by donating food to help low-income seniors and families.

Volunteers are appreciated and welcome every day of the week. We operate from 8am to 5pm. Morning/afternoon shifts are ideal. Since you'll be outdoors, wear comfortable shoes and clothes, bring a coat (if cold or raining), bring a water bottle, and have a positive attitude! We provide gloves and tools. :)
