Install Free Smoke Alarms with the Red Cross (age 16+) *MLK Weekend 2020*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Please join the Red Cross in making our community safer by helping decrease the number of death and injury due to home fire. The Red Cross Responds to an average of two home fires per day in the Cascades region (Oregon/SW Washington) making it the most common disaster response. The Home Fire Campaign provides free smoke alarms and fire safety education to households in need. The only way this is possible is through the power of our wonderful volunteers. Please consider joining us for a one-day event with a lasting impact.

To accomplish our goal, we will form teams of three, with the following roles to choose from:

Installer - Uses power drill and step-stool to install alarms in pre-designated areas.
Documenter - Tracks statistics of # of people reached in household, alarms installed, and other demographics.
Educator - Covers a checklist of topics about fire safety and general disaster preparedness with the household. Provides resources to help create fire escape plan.

All training and resources will be provided to volunteers, no previous experience required.
Ages 16+ welcome to attend. (16-17 years old must have parental chaperone to enter homes)

We will begin training at the Portland Red Cross office at 9 am, so please show up by 8:45 am to get checked in and assigned a role.

Lunch will be provided to all participants.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. In the spirit of creating an atmosphere where people from all parts of our community are coming together to volunteer,

Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual MLK Weekend of Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above.
