Wake up our Dog Walking Path at OHS (age 12+) *MLK Weekend 2020*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About:
For 148 years, OHS has been sheltering abandoned animals, fighting cruelty and neglect, and working to build a caring, compassionate community here in Oregon. We address animal welfare through adoption, low cost spay and neuter services, and investigation of animal abuse situations.

Volunteer Activities:
OHS has a lovely natural area where we walk our dogs. We love to show off our facilities and have volunteers help wake up our path from winter, by spreading bark on the walking paths, removing storm blowdown, pruning vegetation, and removing invasive plants from the area. Volunteers will be visited by friendly shelter dogs. Due to the nature of the work, all volunteers must be able to squat, stand, bend, lift and twist for long periods of time.

Your help makes our dog walking area safe and nice of our volunteers, staff, and our canine residents.

What to Wear:
For the safety reasons, all participants must wear long pants and non-slip, closed toed shoes (tennis shoes, boots, etc.) when volunteering at the shelter. Hanging jewelry is not allowed and facial piercing must be removed or covered with a band-aid.  Those not dressed appropriately cannot participate. Grounds work can soil your clothing so please choose your attire accordingly. Many invasive plants have thorns so we advise bringing a shirt with long sleeves to the event to protect your arms.

All work materials including wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels and gloves will be provided, but we recommend that you bring your own gloves as they may be more comfortable for you.  Please bring a water bottle and coat (if the weather is not good).

What NOT to Bring
Please leave valuables at home or locked in the trunk of your car. This includes purses, MP3 players and cell phones. Unfortunately, we do not have a secure location to store valuables.

Project Requirements:

  • You must be 12 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • Youth 12-17 years old must complete both a Hands On and an OHS Youth Waiver. THe OHS  “Youth Group Volunteer Waiver Form” is here. Please fill it out ahead of time and bring it with you to the shelter.

All volunteers age 12-18 are also required to bring a Hands On Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. In the spirit of creating an atmosphere where people from all parts of our community are coming together to volunteer,

Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual MLK Weekend of Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above.
