Literacy & Math Tutor (age 18+) Referral
The In School Program for Immigrant and Refugee Education (INSPIRE) Program provides academic case management, family engagement, summer programming, and after school enrichment/ tutoring to several immigrant and refugee communities in Portland. This volunteer position assists our advocates who led weekly small group one-on-one literacy and math activities for Slavic elementary school children.
The Tutor Volunteer will assist the INSPIRE program advocates in leading activities for literacy and math skills. This includes a Slavic book club and practicing/reviewing math concepts. The youth are in elementary school between 2nd and 5th grade age and come from Portland's Slavic communities (Russian/ Ukrainian speaking). The younger students do not typically speak English at home and are in need of additional support and guidance. The INSPIRE program is looking for someone who has experience working with elementary school aged children and enjoys working with kids
Qualifications:
• Experience working with ESL students preferred
• Must have patience and a clear/concise communication style
Requirements:
• Must be 18 or older
• Must pass background check
• Must provide proof of COVID Vaccination
IRCO's mission is to promote the integration of refugees, immigrants and the community at large into a self-sufficient, healthy and inclusive multi-ethnic society. The INSPIRE programming provides important resources and assistance to help support immigrant and refugee families. Volunteers will assist the program advocates in delivering this integral support and tutoring.
Volunteers will learn important communication and tutoring strategies to ensure comprehension of students whose primary language is not English.
