Opportunity Details

"Second Saturday" Work Party in the Sensory Garden (age 6+) *Hands On*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Imagine Possibilities Center provides services and programming for youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We serve 74 participants ranging in age from 14-80 years old. Our center is a safe place for our participants to enjoy therapeutic programming, learn new things, grow, meet and exceed their goals, and enjoy a higher quality of life. We also provide daily community inclusion activities. Our mission is to imagine possibilities...every day!

One of the most popular programs at the center is Horticulture Therapy which takes place in the Sensory Garden. Volunteers work on projects that range from weeding to expanding the garden by building pathways and raised beds. These volunteer projects keep the Sensory Garden beautiful and functional so that participants get the most out of Horticulture Therapy.

Horticulture Therapy provides participants opportunities to experience the joy of planting and watering flowers, the sense of pride in nurturing seedlings, and the chance to talk about how they are feeling while connecting to nature.
Volunteers directly enable horticulture therapy to take place. Volunteers will be working to maintain and improve the Sensory Garden. Gardening tasks may include weeding, digging, large plantings, hauling materials, small construction projects, pruning, etc.

Volunteers will be provided with choice of tasks, but the highest priority projects for this work party are weeding, hauling woodchips, and spreading dirt. No green thumbs or special skills required. Instructions will be given for all tasks. Families are welcome, however please come prepared to supervise any small children.

This is hands on garden work, so wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable to move around in and that you don't mind getting dirty.

Please bring gloves if you have them. Currently you also need to supply your own food and drink..
The project leader, Peg Falconer, is a horticulture therapist and master gardener. Her expertise includes gardening and working with people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Volunteers interested in these topics may learn about gardening (including native plants and pesticide free gardening) and about the unique needs of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 6 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
