Opportunity Details

No Ivy Day 2023: Elizabeth M. Gress Park (all ages) *Hands On*

Portland Parks & Recreation: Portland Parks & Recreation's mission is to provide equitable access to welcoming places, programs, and services that improve community health and our environment.

Oswego Lake Watershed Council: The mission of the Oswego Lake Watershed Council is to foster stewardship, education, participation, and financial support for the purpose of the conservation, restoration, enhancement, and maintenance of watershed functions that achieve and sustain a healthy watershed.

About this Opportunity
Join Oswego Lake Watershed Council and Portland Parks & Recreation's No Ivy League for a morning of ivy removal in Tanglewood Park. Tanglewood Park is a Mountain Park Homeowners Association natural area undergoing active habitat restoration. The project is a collaboration between the HOA and Oswego Lake Watershed Council, with support from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board’s Small Grant Program. This 26-acre parcel of urban forest provides wildlife habitat and includes the headwaters of Springbrook Creek.

We will be pulling invasive ivy and other invasive species. Certain plant species can outcompete and suppress native plant communities. By pulling these weeds, we create more space for native plants to thrive. We will be clearing ivy around ferns, Oregon grape, and recent tree plantings. These activities require volunteers to be able to bend over, kneel. Volunteers will be hiking and working off trail on uneven ground. We can arrange alternate projects for those with different abilities or mobility issues.

Children are welcome if accompanied by an attentive adult. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom on site. Please stop by, learn about the ecology of the local watershed, and lend a hand as we enhance this unique habitat!

Parking and public transit:
Street Parking around Cirque and Tanglewood Drive, then walk over to the park entrance off McNary Pkwy. Alternately, use Street Parking near 222 SW Greenridge Dr and take the way under McNary Pkwy to the park. See Map for details. There is a robust trail network, so you may be able to walk through Tanglewood park to the meeting location.

What to Bring and Wear
We will be working outdoors so please dress for the weather (long pants and layers are recommended). Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required. Bring your own water bottle and gloves if you have a pair. Hand tools, gloves, and training will be provided. Please bring any medication you may need (Asthma Inhaler, Epi-Pen, etc.) Please do not attend the event if you are sick.
